Marita Saka is HIV positive. She lives in Thyolo District, Malawi and started antiretroviral treatment in 2005. Marita was doing well on treatment, but then, earlier this year, she began to feel poorly again. Marita went to get her viral load tested and found she had a high viral load -- meaning the HIV virus was not being suppressed by her medicines any longer. After discussions with her counsellors, Marita decided on a new way of taking her medicines, to make sure that she was able to take all her medicines on time. When she was tested a few months later, the viral load had dropped considerably, confirming that the main issue had been a problem of adherence to the medicines. Marita is now looking forward to a much brighter future.
